We are recruiting a Skills Facilitator to join our team at Education Development Trust working on the North East Ambition programme.

Location: Team Valley and covering across the North East - this role is specifically to cover the Durham region, but you may be asked to support in any of the other areas (Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland, South Shields, Newton Aycliffe, Bishop Auckland, Hexham, Cramlington, Alnwick and Berwick-upon-Tweed)

What is North East Ambition? 

The North East Ambition programme is designed to support SMEs and micro businesses across the North East to link more effectively with local and national skills initiatives. The programme is a partnership between Education Development Trust and the North East Local Enterprise Partnership, building upon the successful North East Ambition pilot. The North East Ambition programme is a European Social Fund match funded programme that runs from December 2020 – December 2023.

The Skills Facilitator is required to deliver the North East Ambition Programme; targeted engagement of businesses across a range of sectors and geographical areas focussing on under-engaged SMEs located throughout the North East to help identify and address their skills challenges, including addressing skills gaps and skills shortages (using Government initiatives such as Kickstart, Apprenticeships, Traineeships and Internships) through greater collaboration and engagement within the wider North East skills network and beyond. Ensure effective collaboration with other contracts within Education Development Trust’s career’s portfolio. (Such as the National Careers Service and Making a Difference North East). The Skills Facilitator will build a pipeline of their own referrals through engagement and networking strategies and will support registered SMEs to identify their skills needs through completion of a Training Needs Analysis and the creation of a workforce development plan for their business. They will work with the employer to broker the best skills solutions for their business, case loading businesses and recording all activities and interventions throughout the programme.

The post holder will be expected to engage, develop and maintain effective working relationships with a range of stakeholders such as training providers, local authorities, Higher Education and Further Education Institutions as well as businesses and employers. The post may involve working in more than one location and there will be travel involved. It may be necessary on occasion for the post holder to work outside of standard office hours.

Business development is a key part of this role and would suit someone that thrives working to specific targets whilst working on a programme that aims to future proof the skills agenda across the North East and support businesses with their growth plans.

Person specification:

Essential Knowledge:

  • Educated to Level 4 (or equivalent) in a relevant area
  • Experience of business development and engagement
  • Experience of building relationships and working with a range of partners and stakeholders
  • Understanding and effective use of Information Technology, using a database to record interactions, administrative and workload management skills

Desirable Knowledge:

  • Knowledge and understanding of the wider skills agenda (apprenticeships, Traineeships, Kickstart and Internships)
  • Sales, Business development or Recruitment background
  • Experience of carrying out a Training needs analysis and producing workforce development plans
  • An understanding of Government skills policies and the ability to translate and apply in practice
  • Understanding of the skills and employability agenda within the North East region and the strategic priority and growth sectors in the region.

Essential Experience:

  • Experience of working with businesses 
  • Experience of effective partnership working in the delivery of a service
  • Experience of working to and being measured on targets and /or KPI whilst maintaining a quality and compliant service

Desirable Experience:

  • Experience of setting up and maintaining sector specific skills networks aligned to national or regional priority and growth sectors.
  • Experience of managing and delivering projects
  • Experience of working in skills, or a related field

Due to current Covid restrictions, this role will require virtual engagement and support of small businesses in the short to medium term, candidates will need to be comfortable with engaging with Micro, Small and Medium Sized Enterprises and programme participants through digital channels .  This includes using social media and online platforms to promote the programme.
