Emma, 19, Doncaster, has epilepsy. She left her retail job in 2009 after having a seizure at work and subsequently was referred to North Doncaster Development Trust (NDDT), part of Serco’s network of welfare-to-work providers. While on the Work Programme, Emma suffered a series of seizures and was signed off sick by her doctor. As a result of which she was transferred onto Employment and Support Allowance and no longer had to participate on the Work Programme. However, Emma chose to remain in contact with the provider she was working with and still wished to receive support from her advisor. With her adviser and the employment engagement team’s support, Emma found a job working at a day care centre as a Nursery Assistant.
Emma’s employers have worked alongside Emma to put measures in place in case she was to suffer a seizure in the work place.
